Your Troubles With Sales Funnels

Sales funnels don’t need to be confusing.

When you have a correctly set-up sales funnel, you’re going to be

  • selling more products
  • making money while you do something else and
  • getting new email subscribers every single day.

Now, the point where other guides go wrong is the following:

They show you the parts of a sales funnel.

But they don’t explain how to breathe life into it once it is set up. And this is where my guide is different.

What Is A Sales Funnel System?

A sales funnel could be explained as a series of steps that the visitors of your website need to go through in order to become your customers. At each step they are less in number, therefore when you make a graphical representation, it will look like a funnel.

A funnel can be made up of webinars, emails, video content, or any other kind of content that you feel comfortable producing.

My favorite funnel, and one of the most effective, is a free email course that leads into your paid product with strategic marketing messages.

New visitors move through your funnel, get introduced to you and your product, and are educated, given tons of value and pitched with strategic marketing messages throughout the process.

Why Do You Need A Sales Funnel?

There’s a huge difference between a sales funnel website and a regular affiliate site. On a regular site visitors come, some of them clock at your links, some of them buys, but the majority (70 percent) will leave and never return. All those visitors are now lost for your business.

A sales funnel expert is able to take your site and get it to a point where it will be making more sales with the same number of visitors (improve conversions).

Unless you are happy to make some random sales here and there and only during big promos, you need a funnel, a SYSTEM for bringing in cash every single day.

You can’t just put up a product, a service or a course, and hope that sales will flood in. You need to communicate with your new subscribers, EDUCATE them, and pitch them strategically throughout the funnel.

Sales Funnel Awareness

A lot of people don’t see sales funnels. They see the autoresponder opt-in forms, the emails, the thank you page, but they fail to connect the dots. Such sales funnel blindness in a website owner will decrease conversions.

A Simple Sales Funnel

A funnel is nothing more than a flow plan for your traffic.

The simplest funnel would look like the one I have on my other website:

  1. Visitor comes to website from search engine after searching for a keyword
  2. They read your content and click on on your related affiliate link.

There is a plan how the visitors are supposed to go…

But the problem with this “funnel” is that it requires a lot of “fuel” (energy to drive visitors) in order to make you money because it has a very low conversion rate.

Also, you don’t own your visitors.

But still, you hear about people who make a living with this type of funnel. They just drive tons of visitors.

A Basic Sales Funnel Blueprint

The next funnel is still something that I wouldn’t recommend:

  • A visitor comes to your website looking for something
  • You ask for an email address in exchange for the information
  • You direct the visitor to a One-Time Offer page.

This is a bit better, but is still lacking two things: follow-up and trust.

And, how much follow-up do you need to make money?

As I already mentioned in another post Theresa Nguyen, who is a now 14 years old, and this is her funnel:

  1. She shares videos of her homemade slime on her Instagram account that get hundreds of thousands of views.
  2. People follow her on Instagram. With just 400 such live posts, she has gathered a following of 1 million people.
  3. Her Instagram account is linked to her Shopify store.
  4. Her follow-up? She posts some videos and announces the restock on her Instagram account.

While most kids her age are making a few extra bucks selling Girl Scout cookies or babysitting, Theresa Nguyen is raking in $3,000 a month.

How is she doing it? By selling homemade slime on Instagram.

Theresa, a Texas native who runs the account @Rad.Slime, is one of many teenagers cashing in on the rising trend. Her homemade slime is very different from from the Play-Doh or putty you grew up playing with. It’s much more colorful and glittery, and it comes in all sorts of textures.

After seeing other people post their homemade slime on Instagram last summer, Theresa was inspired to create her own. On a trip to Walmart with her parents, she picked up a few bottles of glue to experiment with. She eventually wanted to sell her creations, so she asked her parents for permission.

“They laughed because it is silly to be honest,” she said. But soon they changed their tune.

“When I did start getting a larger following and more sales, they immediately wanted to help,” Theresa said.

At 13 years old, Theresa already had 1 million followers, more than some major brands such as AT&T, Yahoo, and CVS.

And maybe you think she is a special case? Look at the “Suggested” button on her account:

Purple slimes, Stellar slime, Slimey fantasy… Some of these kids are 12-year-olds. They only have 41k or 234k followers…

They use Etsy as their platform.

So, if a 14-year-old can make $3,000 per month from her sales funnel, don’t tell me you can’t… (just kidding).

The Funnel That People Use Nowadays

The following is is the most widespread funnel in use today:

  • Blog post that gets visitors (content, Facebook, Pinterest)
  • Opt-in form on squeeze page
  • Lead Magnet
  • Follow up with email and re-targeting
  • Sales

There could be other steps and complications added with choices, etc., but I am not going into those.

Why Don’t People Get Sales From Their Funnels?

A lot of bloggers run into the situation of “I set up a sales funnel sequence, but nobody is buying…”

You email your list regularly. You even make some sales.

But your funnel isn’t bringing in a steady cash flow month after month.

Most people understand that they need to create a sequence of valuable information – but they have no clue –

  • What product to include (they include the wrong product)
  • HOW and WHEN to mention their product
  • How to get more people to subscribe.

Therefore their high value content goes to waste.

And people just have NO CLUE what they need to include in their sales funnel – or feel it’s too difficult.

Take a moment to ask yourself the following:

  1. What audience, exactly, are you targeting?
  2. Which of their problems do you solve?

Let’s Break Down The Problem With Funnels

You need to ask yourself some questions…

“Does my opt-in offer satisfy a real need of my ideal customer?”

Too often we throw together a simple e-book or some other download, without ever thinking over if our ideal customer—the one we really want to sell to—really needs or wants it. Unless your opt-in offer answers a driving question or solves a problem for your client, he’s not going to sign up.

Blog owners want to see the backlinks to their blogs, right?

Normally such a service costs $50 or $100 a month.

The opportunity to download it for free is pretty compelling if this is what someone is looking for.

Is your “lead magnet” super compelling for your potential subscribers?

If not, you need to find a better one.

“Is your visitor aware of the fact that he needs your product/services?”

Per Derek Halpern there are three different kinds of potential customers:

  • The informed
  • The afflicted
  • The oblivious

The informed already know their problem and have already done their research. They just haven’t made up their mind as to which product to buy.

The afflicted know that they have a problem, but it is unsolvable for them and they have no idea what to do about it.

The oblivious don’t even know that they have a problem. They think their pain is completely normal, that’s how life is, they are the ones that “learned to live with it”.

The above kind of opt-in only works for the informed.

The oblivious will need an engaging blog post to move them up to afflicted first and then to informed.

Are you moving your customers to informed with your blog post?

“Does your follow-up series continue to help resolve their problem?”

This is another point where a lot of funnels fail—in the follow up.

In order to keep your readers’ interest, your follow-up emails should continue to address the problem that originally brought them to you.

Rambling about irrelevant subjects, offering unrelated products and random affiliate offers do nothing to build trust and can even lead to unsubscribes.

Is your follow-up series emails helping to resolve a problem?

“Does my main offer follow naturally from the opt-in?”

If your opt-in incentive is designed to do one thing, your main offer need to be in the same subject.

And your main offer needs to be an outstanding product that sells well.

Is your main offer (if you have one) a really hot product?

All the pieces of your funnel need to flow naturally from one to the next. It’s this alignment that will help keep your prospective customers interested and eventually buy from you.

How I Build Sales Funnels

My funnel consists of the following elements:

  1. An epic website content attracting visitors
  2. Landing page(s)
  3. Lead magnet(s)
  4. Visitors signing up for my list
  5. A low-priced tripwire on the front end
  6. Automated follow-up, building trust & educating
  7. Recommending solutions to your subscriber’s problems in the form of lower and higher-priced items.
  8. Methods for traffic creation and conversion optimization

The components that I use in order to sell products are the following:

  • Provide outstanding value for my visitors/customers
  • I build trust and authority
  • I create engagement with my website and my brand
  • I do all the above through follow-up

E-Mail: The Key To Your Funnel

Email marketing is the EASIEST and MOST EFFECTIVE of all marketing tactics.

Email is one of the most important elements in your sales funnel. An automated email follow-up sequence done the RIGHT WAY is what can take a website that only converts 1% of it’s traffic into sales and leads, and easily triple that.

A funnel that consists of content (and ads) that work to attract thousands of prospects into your funnel every week, landing pages and offers that convert them into email subscribers, and finally a sophisticated nurturing and automated follow-up sequence that turns those passive prospects into new and repeat customers can generate 6-7 figures in sales revenue.

Have you noticed that spam e-mails are at their highest point? This proves the same thing: e-mail marketing is effective, even for spammers, otherwise they wouldn’t do it.

If it is profitable for them, then you, with your awesome content, why would you have trouble?

Funnel Implementation

So far it sounds very easy.

When I first read about it, it sounded like I just found the jackpot.

The problem we all face is the implementation.

  • How do you construct a landing page?
  • What copy do you put on it?
  • How do you drive traffic?
  • How do you capture the leads?
  • What are you going to say in the e-mails?
  • What autoresponder service to choose?

Yes, you will get to a point where you have your autoresponder set up, your lead magnet, your email series, you spent all that time on these… And no traffic, no subscribers, no sales, no money.

How I Implemented The Sales Funnel For My Blog

1. I wrote all my site content in one blitz.

I didn’t do bits and piece writing. I simply took 20 blog posts from my old blog, didn’t worry about duplicate content at all.

Having the same blog post on two different sites is not going to give you any trouble with Google. Only if it is on multiple sites.

When I learned something new, I updated these posts with the new knowledge and I left the ones on the old site unchanged.

The proof of the pudding is the eating, my new site is doing very well, starting to get organic traffic.

Note: Copying my content didn’t mean that it was unoriginal and low quality. On the opposite – very high quality unique content, just like this post, the only thing is that not many people read it because I didn’t have a lot of traffic on my previous site.

In fact I had someone telling me about the “crazy deep posts” that I have on my blog.

I also wrote several new blog posts, and all this content was strategically planned to be incorporated into my free email course.

I used all SEO knowledge, I tried to use medium-long tail keywords, but I didn’t worry about it if it wasn’t possible.

The main purpose of most of these posts wasn’t search engine traffic, but having material that email subscribers find useful and can clock in long stay-on-page times to generate trust with Google. Look at this screenshot:

These posts also had the function to provide materials that can be promoted in Facebook groups.

Almost forgot, I created my Facebook page, renamed my Pinterest and Twitter accounts, added these new interests to Quora.

2. I ensured my site looked great and was opt-in friendly

First of all, I gradually worked out what my blog FunnelXpert stands for, and this is what I communicate on all channels. This is what I mean:

  • FunnelXpert is for bloggers that have trouble getting traffic to their blog and make it profitable. NOT for the ones that are trying to figure out how to set up their domain and hosting, etc.
  • FunnelXpert uses and teaches value, trust, engagement. 40 percent email open rate, people waiting to get my emails, get your blog to bring consistent income. These are the factors that set me apart from the rest of the blogs on the internet.

I have Thrive Themes and Thrive Leads and I would never switch, even though they cost $218 for a year.

I wrote an entire post about Thrive, but I still feel that it doesn’t communicate everything.

I am using the Pressive Theme, but there are a whole bunch of other themes you can pick from.

There are pre-made templates that you can use for home page, landing pages, opt-in forms, you name it:

I have no problem creating landing pages, opt-in pages, I just pick the one I like and replace the text, which is a great function of the Thrive Content Builder plugin.

In terms of opt-in forms, my Thrive Leads plugin automatically places my opt-in boxes to the bottom of each post, I set my opt-in pop-up to go off 30 seconds after the visitor arrives, and this converts the best.

Using this plugin does result in more opt-ins, I never in my life received opt-ins on autopilot like this.

I didn’t spend time on creating a lead magnet, I just used my email course (autoresponder series) as my lead magnet.

I did make mistake of naming it incorrectly – what you call it can be the difference between 5 percent and 50 percent conversions.

I literally ran into a blogger who said she was getting a 50 percent sign-up rate for an email course to increase blog traffic.

So… you can check out mine and see if it compels you to sign up. I still don’t feel that it is final, but I know that increasing blog traffic, email subscribers and blog income are the top incentives for bloggers.

3. I wrote my autoresponder series

In fact I had to rewrite it 3 times so far…

The emails need to have catchy subject lines that people open. I am averaging 40 percent open rate, which is double the industry average for internet marketing.

The next email1problem I ran into was the click-through rate from my emails… Around 13 percent.

Now I am rewriting it the 4th time to create more engagement – using the title of the blog post I want them to click through is not enough, I am adding an excerpt to make it more intriguing.

I also need to push the pain points more.

I had to realize that writing an email needs to be treated the same way you would treat writing a blog post…

It needs to be engaging, stuffed with value… Not just a “click here to read my post”.

One thing I need to use is story telling.

If you think back to the story of the teenagers selling their slime, you will have an idea what I am talking about.

Stories create engagement through an emotional effect.

People make a lot of decisions (also buying decisions) because of their emotions and not because of rational reasons.

You need to utilize this in your content.

4. I added my affiliate offers

This was very tricky…

I don’t have affiliate offers in my emails at all. My email provider, Mailerlite, has a free tier up to 1,000 subscribers, and it is very useful for a beginner, but it has strict rules on affiliate marketing and I don’t want all my work to be shut down like it happened with MailChimp.

On the affiliate offers it is very important to pick the right product that matches your subscribers AND converts- I spoke about this above.

If you see you are getting sales from a specific product, start pushing it more.

I used to always have the in-text links, which are not bad, but don’t give you maximum conversion.

I recently started to put an offer into the sidebar, but also it is very good to use offer boxes.

You have to break up your text anyways with images, so why not use the opportunity to insert some pictures and link to an affiliate offer that matches the text? I am about to do a whole number to implement this.

5. I drove traffic and wrote more blog posts

My traffic strategy is very simple.

I am a member of around 25 Facebook groups.

I take one post and I promote it in all groups. Comment-for-comment, share-for-share, Like-for-like.

The key is that my posts are engaging for anyone who is in these groups. To do otherwise destroys your Analytics metrics.

I keep pumping traffic. I watch the email open and click-through statistics and I tweak the subject lines and the email content.

I write more posts, but now only with long-tail keywords to build more organic traffic. With my low authority blog, I only use keywords that have less than 100 monthly searches, but I pack as many as possible into my posts without destroying user experience or stuffing keywords.

I tweet regularly, not just my own stuff, but other people’s, this give value and authority to my profile, as people like and retweet the stuff that I tweet out.

I regularly answer questions on Quora, but I take it to a new level compared to what other people do. Here is an example:

You need to know that pretty much all domain registrars provide very similar service in terms of regular domains. The main difference is prices and customer service. Let’s do a very simple comparison.

As you can see, I am very thorough, just like in my blog posts and I link back to my relevant articles and also leave my affiliate links in the answer as applicable, which is completely legal in Quora.
