It is one thing to write great content, but then you need to make sure people will read it. This is why titles and headlines are really important.

When it comes to writing titles, there are diverse approaches, and none is really right or wrong. It is only decided by the fact if people will click through or not.

The same rules apply to blog post headlines, email titles, text ads, e-book titles, newsletter names, YouTube video titles, or anything similar where people are supposed to click through, buy or sign up.

Exact: When you write a title, it needs to be exact, because this is what the expectations of your readers will depend on. If you set expectations that you can’t fulfill, you lose your readers’ trust.

Benefit: Clearly state what’s the benefit of your item.

Colorful: Use strong, colorful words in your title.

Exciting: Make people curious… Curiosity killed the cat…

Emotion: Use words that create emotions.

Action: Use your action verbs at the beginning of your headline.

Short: The best titles are short, but punchy. Under 60 characters.

Keyword: Use a keyword as close to the beginning as possible.

Human: Write it for humans, not search engines.

How to: Most people want to improve their abilities in some way. Appeal to these with a “how-to”.

Question: Ask a thought-provoking question.

Solution: People don’t just want information. They want solutions to their pain points.

Shock: If your title shocks people, they will open it easier… just don’t be like a gossip paper, otherwise you will lose your credibility.

Exclusive: People love exclusive or influencer stuff. They will read it and share it.

Extraordinary value: This is good if you can fill the expectations. $10,000 in 5 days…

Lists: Use lists whenever you can.
